Roaming Directive
Backed by the European Parliament, regulation on mobile phone roaming charges introduced in 2007 saw outgoing calls capped at €0.49 per minute and incoming at €0.24. New EU wide rules will cap the cost of each text message when sent from abroad at the price of 11 Euro Cent. This new law should be enacted by July 2009.
Services Directive
The services sector accounts for nearly two-thirds of Europe's economy, but to realise the full potential of this market it needed to be opened up and made more competitive.
Reach Directive & Regulation
The aim is to protect public health and the environment from chemicals. It is considered one of the most important pieces of legislation in EP and EU history. The aim of the legislation is to gather information on 30,000 chemicals.
Safer Easier Travel
Since 2004 the European Health Insurance Card has made it easier for people travelling or on holiday to receive urgent medical care.
European laws give Irish air travellers greater rights when they are flying. The Single European Sky legalisation adopted in 2004 ensures greater safety and an increased efficiency.
Consumer Protection
The EU has protected the interests of European and Irish citizens through the introduction and enforcement of legislation against price fixing, cartels, unfair monopolies and misleading advertising. Airline ticketing websites must now give consumers increased price transparency when booking.
The Consumer Policy Strategy 2007-2013 aims to empower consumers, enhance their welfare, and protect them.
