BIOGRAPHY

Brian Crowley has topped the poll in Munster in every election he has contested.  In the European Elections (South), he topped the poll in 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009.  Such consistency makes him one of the most successful public representatives in Irish electoral history.

In the most recent election in June 2009, despite the swing against his party, he received 118,258 first preference votes, making him once again, the biggest vote getter in Ireland.

His career as a public representative began back in 1993, when the then Taoiseach, appointed him to the Senate “to be a voice for all those who have no voice”.

Born in 1964 he is a wheelchair user owing to an accident when he was sixteen, when he fell from a building which left him paralysed from the hips down.  He also survived another near death experience some years later, in a car accident.

Brian Crowley is now the longest serving Irish MEP and has also served on President McAleese’s Council of State here at home.

He is a member of the ALDE Political Group in the European Parliament, (Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe), and is a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy - and substitute member of the Committee on Legal Affairs.

A proven track record and experience of how the EU works has made him very successful in the areas of economic aid, employment opportunity, healthcare, benefits for the retired and the unemployed, urban and agricultural supports, education, research and development - for his constituents in Ireland South.

Ireland is now part of an EU community of 27 countries and 500 million people - and Brian Crowley has been an influential performer there over the past 15 years.
